چکیده

Lossy channel systems model a set of nite state processes interacting with each other over unbounded, lossy FIFO channels. This computational model is an abstraction of protocols in the lower layers of the network protocol hierarchy. In spite of its unbounded FIFO queues the Lossy channel system model is not turing-powerful. It has been shown that the reachability problem is decidable 1]. However, the model-checking problem, against speciications in linear time temporal logic (LTL), is known to be undecidable 2]. Given that the rate of message loss in communication systems can be probabilistically characterized we consider a probabilistic version of Lossy channel systems. We show that the problem of checking whether a LTL requirement holds almost always. i.e., with probability 1, of probabilistic lossy channel systems (PLCS) is decidable. As can be expected the probability of message loss does not play a part in the model-checking procedure.

Reasoning about Probabilistic Lossy Channel Systems

We consider the problem of deciding whether an innnite-state system (expressed as a Markov chain) satisses a correctness property with probability 1. This problem is, of course, undecidable for general innnite-state systems. We focus our attention on the model of proba-bilistic lossy channel systems consisting of nite-state processes that communicating over unbounded lossy FIFO channels. Abdull...

Model Checking Lossy Channels Systems Is Probably Decidable

Lossy channel systems (LCS’s) are systems of finite state automata that communicate via unreliable unbounded fifo channels. We propose a new probabilistic model for these systems, where losses of messages are seen as faults occurring with some given probability, and where the internal behavior of the system remains nondeterministic, giving rise to a reactive Markov chains semantics. We then inv...

Establishing Qualitative Properties for Probabilistic Lossy Channel Systems: An Algorithmic Approach

Lossy channel systems (LCSs for short) are models for communicating systems where the subprocesses are linked via unbounded FIFO channels wh ich might lose messages. Link protocols, such as the Alternating Bit Protocol and HDLC can be modelled with these systems. The decidability of several verification problems of LCSs has been investigated by Abdulla & Jonsson [AJ93,AJ94], e.g. they have show...

Quantitative Analysis of Probabilistic Lossy Channel Systems

Many protocols are designed to operate correctly even in the case where the underlying communication medium is faulty. To capture the behaviour of such protocols, lossy channel systems (LCS) have been proposed. In an LCS the communication channels are modelled as FIFO buffers which are unbounded, but also unreliable in the sense that they can nondeterministically lose messages. Recently, severa...

Verifying Nondeterministic Channel Systems With Probabilistic Message Losses

Lossy channel systems (LCS’s) are systems of finite state automata that communicate via unreliable unbounded fifo channels. In order to circumvent the undecidability of model checking for nondeterministic LCS’s, probabilistic models have been introduced, where it can be decided whether a linear-time property holds almost surely. However, such fully probabilistic systems are not a faithful model...
